I think Edwards is right. I don't think he's trying to read God's mind. He's looking at what appalled Jesus in the Gospels and seeing similar patterns here and drawing good conclusions. Nor do I think it is simply for votes. I was not impressed with Edwards in '04, especially after he became Kerry's echo, I mean running mate. But I have been very impressed with him since then. He has put eradicating poverty on the front burner in a political campaign for the first time since Bobby Kennedy was assassinated. His healthcare plan is a serious effort that would quickly lead to universal healthcare.
I am more impressed with Kucinich and Richardson on foreign policy, but I think Edwards is right on target in this interview for the most part.
The parts that worry me is his reluctant semi-endorsement of government funding for "faith based initiatives." That violation of church-state separation MUST be repealed--and it isn't just Bush. Clinton opened the door with his very unwise "Charitable Choice" act.

Yes, it is aggravating when mere mortals think they can speak for God. The one American who has spoken more for God, ever, has been George Bush - shall we put an end to that as well - or is it okay as he is a "compassionate conservative?"

Jesus is appalled. I hate when mere mortals think they can speak for God, especially to get votes. If I was to venture a guess at what God might be thinking; I think He may be outraged, angry, broken-hearted and sad beyond belief at what the human race has evolved into. Ugh, we are so mean and ugly a species.
