BREITBART.COM – Edwards: Jesus Would Be Appalled
John Edwards, hopeful Democratic presidential candidate, has staked a claim to what he believes Jesus thinks about America. America, according to Edwards, has allowed the suffering to continue to suffer and has stripped prayer away from children in school [an odd statement by a Democratic candidate].
Although, I’m not on the same page with Edwards politically and, honestly, I’m not a big fan of his, I do agree with him – at least halfway. America has allowed suffering to continue all for the sake and preservation of capitalistic greed. This is a horrible thing indeed. I’m not so sure that America as a whole is to carry out Christian love as much as the Christians within America are. It is us, the body of Christ, that are to help end the suffering of the suffering, i.e., bring about the Kingdom of God.
As for the prayer remark, I believe that to be a ploy to gain support. He initially gave this interview to Beliefnet.com, which is viewed by conservative and liberal Christians alike. I think he’s just trying to play the odds here. A typical political move made by all politicians regardless of affiliation.
I agree with Edwards, though the complete reference to what he’s referring to is disagreeable to me I suppose. Jesus probably is appalled with America, but we as Christians can hopefully change that.

Jesus is appalled. I hate when mere mortals think they can speak for God, especially to get votes. If I was to venture a guess at what God might be thinking; I think He may be outraged, angry, broken-hearted and sad beyond belief at what the human race has evolved into. Ugh, we are so mean and ugly a species.

Yes, it is aggravating when mere mortals think they can speak for God. The one American who has spoken more for God, ever, has been George Bush – shall we put an end to that as well – or is it okay as he is a “compassionate conservative?”

I think Edwards is right. I don’t think he’s trying to read God’s mind. He’s looking at what appalled Jesus in the Gospels and seeing similar patterns here and drawing good conclusions. Nor do I think it is simply for votes. I was not impressed with Edwards in ‘04, especially after he became Kerry’s echo, I mean running mate. But I have been very impressed with him since then. He has put eradicating poverty on the front burner in a political campaign for the first time since Bobby Kennedy was assassinated. His healthcare plan is a serious effort that would quickly lead to universal healthcare.
I am more impressed with Kucinich and Richardson on foreign policy, but I think Edwards is right on target in this interview for the most part.
The parts that worry me is his reluctant semi-endorsement of government funding for “faith based initiatives.” That violation of church-state separation MUST be repealed–and it isn’t just Bush. Clinton opened the door with his very unwise “Charitable Choice” act.
